Why Are We So Unkind to Ourselves?

Understanding the Roots of Self-Criticism—and How to Cultivate Self-Compassion Instead

When you’re running on empty, even the idea of self-care can feel like another thing on your never-ending list. But here’s the truth: self-care isn’t selfish—it’s survival. For many mums, especially those overwhelmed by the mental load of parenting, emotional stress, shame, and anxiety can quietly take over. That’s why self-care strategies for overwhelmed mothers aren’t just helpful—they’re essential. In this post, I want to talk about the one thing we often forget to offer ourselves in the hardest moments: compassion. We do so much—holding families together, managing households, nurturing little hearts—yet we rarely extend the same tenderness to ourselves. This week, I’m focusing on practical, honest ways to reconnect with self-love and self-compassion, especially when life feels like too much. Because you matter. And you’re not alone.

So much on our plate, so little timeTo keep our car in tip-top condition, we check the tyres, put in the petrol, MOT, and service. We, too not only deserve this type of attention but also NEED it to keep ourselves healthy to mother. If you’re struggling then know society has normalised not looking after Mums, we may need to take radical action to support ourselves.

Reaching for Self-Compassion When Life Gets Hard The weight of the “mother load,” the reality of parenting’s mental toll, and the guilt that can creep in when not every moment feels joyful. Parenting has incredible highs, but it also has deeply challenging lows. I want to support mums in letting go of the guilt when it doesn’t feel great.

This conversation is more important than ever. Earlier this year MP Laura Kyrke-Smith spoke on Woman’s Hour about maternal mental health, sharing the tragic loss of her friend to suicide just 10 weeks after giving birth. She’s calling for more support, highlighting that 70% of mums don’t talk openly about their mental health. This needs to change.

We can all play a part. By sharing a more honest view of parenting, we normalize the struggles and the need for support. This could mean opening up to a partner, friend, or family member—or simply giving yourself permission to say, No wonder this feels hard. I need to care for my mental wellbeing—not just for myself, but for those around me.
You are not alone. And you deserve compassion, too.
